Global Challenges in Inorganic Chemistry

‘Global Challenges in Inorganic Chemistry’ (GCIC) is a free, virtual, half-day conference hosted by the OxICFM CDT. The aim of this student-led event is to encourage current undergraduate students to pursue graduate study in synthetic inorganic chemistry by showcasing inspiring and promising research from renowned groups from across the breadth of the field. Each year, a line-up of international speakers are invited, allowing the students to hear cutting edge science directly from the people who discovered it – an opportunity they probably would not otherwise get. Entirely organised by OxICFM CDT students, the aim of this annual meeting is to help improve understanding and foster motivation of graduate studies in inorganic chemistry.

On Tue 11th June, we celebrated the fourth edition of this event, again with a fantastic line-up of speakers. This year we had talks from Prof Polly Arnold (UC Berkeley), Prof Peter Caravan (Harvard), Dr Sarah Cleary (HydRegen Ltd) and Francesca Fiorentini (OxICFM CDT student).

Organising the 'Global Challenges in Inorganic Chemistry' undergraduate conference was an absolute pleasure and a wonderful experience to try and make a positive impact on the inorganic chemistry community. I was delighted by the attendees, all the insightful questions asked, and the excellent and inspiring talks from all three speakers.

Organising the 2022 edition of the 'Global Challenges in Inorganic Chemistry' conference was so much fun and incredibly rewarding. It was fantastic to see enthusiastic undergraduates engaging in discussions on cutting-edge research with world leading academics. I am sure many went away inspired to pursue chemical research beyond their undergraduate studies. I learnt so much from planning the event and I can't wait for GCIC 2023!
